Earth House

The house of the future must offer a thoughtful
spatial, cultural, and climatic response to the unique
context of the United Arab Emirates. Traditionally,
the distinction between public and private realms
has been fundamental to Emirati domestic life,
with this separation deeply influencing spatial
organisation. The Earth House engages with this
tradition through the lens of a contemporary design.
Central to the design is a reconsideration of the
land - not only as a physical foundation, but as
a resource and shelter, shaped by centuries of
adaptation. This re-engagement with the earth has
guided the architectural response, resulting in a
home organised around a central courtyard. The
courtyard acts as the heart of the house, offering
refuge from the region’s hot climate. A series of
pools within the courtyard cool incoming air and
irrigate the shaded space, allowing each resident to
nurture their own micro-biome.
The use of rammed earth as the primary building
material enhances the home’s environmental
performance. Its thermal mass moderates indoor
temperatures during the day, while natural
convection currents promote passive cooling and
fresh air circulation throughout the night.
A central band of operable louvres defines the
threshold between the family and public zones
of the home, offering both spatial clarity and
environmental function. These louvres enable the
passive movement of cool, fresh air drawn from the
courtyard, supporting natural ventilation throughout
the interior.
The Majlis is strategically positioned to benefit
from the courtyard’s passive cooling system and
the calming presence of the cultivated microbiome. This integration of nature enhances thermal
comfort and promotes well-being - creating an
ideal gathering space that is private, temperate, and
deeply connected to the natural environment.
The upper floor is designed to function as a fully
self-contained living space - ideal for hosting guests
or serving as a quiet, comfortable retreat following
shared family time.
Two louvred corridors create a clear visual and
spatial distinction between the primary living area,
the master suite, and the additional bedrooms.
Mirroring the role of the central louvres on the
ground floor, these bands facilitate the passive flow
of cool air across the upper level - an essential
strategy for maintaining thermal comfort during the
night.
