Petal Lake
Project type
Architectural Concept
Date
February 2026
Location
Canada
Designed and visualised by Afterform Studio, this project is a research hub dedicated to the study of microbial life within the Arctic tundra grasslands. The architecture is conceived through the concept of petals - individual yet interconnected forms that emerge from the landscape as if shaped by geological and biological forces over time.
Each petal functions as a specialized research environment, while collectively they form a distributed organism embedded within the tundra. The petal geometries respond to ground conditions, tectonic traces, and seasonal light, allowing the building to adapt to the fragile Arctic environment rather than dominate it. Their curved forms shelter research spaces while channeling wind, snow, and light across the site.
The project blurs distinctions between architecture, terrain, and ecology. Like the microbial systems it studies, the research hub operates as a quiet network—resilient, adaptive, and deeply rooted in its environment—where science unfolds in dialogue with deep time, climate, and living ground.
